I've been wearing my Oura Ring 4 for three months now, so I've really put the health tracker through its paces. So when I came across the sleek Oura Ring, with its minimalistic and discreet design, I knew this was one health tracker that I wanted to wear. I may be a beauty editor who tests new beauty products for a living, but I also have a keen interest in all things health and wellness (in fact, I used to be a health writer earlier in my career). Automatic Activity Detection (AAD) now includes average heart rate and heart rate zones for 40+ activities, automatically giving you a more comprehensive view of your movement throughout the day. This easier-to-navigate setup provides an at-a-glance view into your holistic wellness data on a daily basis and trends over time.
There really is a wealth of information at your fingertips, and it gets better and more accurate the longer you wear your ring. You can get down into the really nitty-gritty with the data if you want to, but it's not forced upon you. Plus, if you happen to lose your ring, you can trace it on the Oura app.
Those users with Oura Rings can see their readiness data in their Strava account. Despite its internal sensors, it’s rather lightweight, measuring 0.14 to 0.21 ounces depending on ring size. But one thing has remained the same — more than anything else, it’s a conversation starter. Check out my full Oura Ring 4 review to see why I think it's the best smart ring money can buy. We care about protecting your data. Oura was the firststep in improvingmy sleep. My Oura data ismy form of guideddecision-making.
But it's nice to have.Lastly, you can also consolidate your data into trends and reports. I haven't used it all that often, perhaps because I was testing during the festive season, where I didn't need an app to tell me that cheese and biscuits aren't a highly nutritious meal. You can also turn on rest mode for jet lag, illness or injuries to help you prioritise rest and recovery.
It includes the Advisor, which is an AI-style chat where you can ask it just about anything about your health metrics, or ask for advice on how to create a good bedtime routine, ways to manage stress and more. So I favour apps like Stardust (which can be connected to the Oura Ring) to log and track other symptoms for my menstrual cycle health. Whilst you can log how heavy your period is, there is no way to tag other symptoms (as of yet) that you might have during your cycle that other period-tracking apps have. The app gives you suggestions on ways to relax and unwind, and you can access in-app meditations and see in real time how these activities help to bring your body back to a more relaxed state of mind. It's interesting to see how they can fluctuate during different days and what activities bring on stress or restoration. Amusingly, when I was drying my hair with a hot brush one evening, the Oura Ring detected it as a workout.I also like that the Oura app encourages me to stretch my legs if I've been sitting at my desk for too long (guilty), so it helps me stay active in even small ways, which all add up over time.
When the symptom radar detects something, you can turn on "Rest Mode", which will pause your activity goal. It flagged when I was unwell; however, it took a couple of days into my illness for the ring to register it. By measuring your biometrics, it can detect if something is straining your body or if you're coming down with something. Another feature of the Oura Ring is being able to track your menstrual cycle. It's helped me prioritise both mental and physical rest and make active steps to improve my resilience. Measuring your heart metrics, it can detect when you're feeling calm and zen (in the Relaxed and Restored modes) as well as when you're feeling more switched or stressed (during Engaged and Stressed modes).
Every popular wearable I tested thought this was a brief wake window followed by an hour of sleep. We would sometimes wake up early and I would rock them in a gliding chair to buy an extra hour of sleep. During my testing, I compared a week of sleep data from the Oura Ring 4 to data from the Samsung Galaxy Ring (paired with the Samsung Galaxy Watch ($349) and the Apple Watch Series 11 ($399).
This score typically compares your activity to rest, as well as HRV and lets you know if you’re "ready" to take on the day. But we're going to dig past the chic outward appearance in this review, and dive deeper into its sleep tracking, stress monitoring, sport modes, and every dirty detail we noticed in six months of testing. No health-tech purchase should be a replacement for professional medical care, but since I first slipped on my Oura ring, I’ve increased my exercise levels, improved my sleep and gained a better understanding of how I can prioritise rest and feel ready to take on the day.
The price of an Oura ring is typically higher than other fitness trackers – Oura costs vary from £299 to £599 depending on which metal and style you go for, and there's an ongoing monthly membership of £5.99 (or £69.99 annually) on top to access the app. It’s the first app I check in the morning, and while going on your phone first thing isn't exactly ideal, it’s much better than doomscrolling on Instagram. It's no wonder that Oura has amassed quite a celebrity fan base, with Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow and Miranda Kerr all wearing one every day. For CVA, After 14 days of ring use, the wearer can check Oura’s metrics to see if they’re trending below, above or in alignment (within five years) of their chronological age.
